Come Hungry

Opening Day 2005

There's nothing like negotiating downtown traffic in mid-day, parking two and a half miles from the ballpark, missing the opening ceremonies and most of the first inning, being overcharged for hot dogs and beer, putting up with casual fans who arrive in the fifth inning and don't pay any attention to the action on the field, and watching your team give up eight earned runs to remind you what's great about baseball.

Um, which is what, exactly?

Still, there's nothing like a nice spring day at the ballpark. It's relaxing, exciting, exhilarating, and frustrating all at the same time. So what if the Pirates lost? It's only one game — there's still 161 left to go, and they're never crazier than the opener. And I'll be there, rain or shine. The Pirates may be bums — but goddammit, they're my bums.
